If you’ve found a cat or are on our waiting list for foster space, you might want to try HPC’s new Community Foster Program. It offers a way of getting a cat fixed and posted for adoption without being an official HPC cat yet. We’d advise you during the fostering process and help you schedule a full vetting.
How does it work?
If the cat is getting vetted as part of the Community Foster Program, you have agreed to cover the cost of vetting, which is $125-163 (varies by clinic and gender), the amount we are charged by the clinic. By agreement, they charge us directly, so that instead of you paying them at the time of service, you would pay us by going to our donations page and paying by Venmo or PayPal. This will cover our costs.
A full vetting includes spay/neuter, chip, vaccinations, deworm/deflea, testing for FIV/FeLV. Once the cat is spayed/neutered we would start advertising him as available for adoption. We would screen applications and collect an adoption fee. If the cat is adopted through us we would reimburse you $125-163 from the adoption fee. Alternatively, you may seek to find the cat a home or an alternative rescue or decide to keep him yourself.
If you decide to rehome the cat on your own or advertise it through another rescue, please let us know as soon as possible. While cat rescues and shelters often work together, out of professional courtesy, no two shelters or rescues will knowingly list the same cat simultaneously. So it is important to inform HPC immediately if you are going to another rescue/shelter; likewise, inform any other rescue or shelter that has accepted the kitty (even on a waitlist) if you decide to go with HPC.
If and when the cat officially enters the HPC program, we would take over all future vet care from that point on. But we would not be responsible for any additional vet care he might have required up to the point of official entry into the HPC program. (For instance, if the cat develops an ear infection while on our waiting list, you would be responsible for obtaining and paying for treatment.) This preserves our funds so we can adequately care for all the cats officially in our program (about 50 adoptables right now). Since we have an unconditional return policy, that’s potentially a lifetime commitment.
